GARY MILLER

REFLECTIONS ON WAR

Gary Miller’s groundbreaking and highly acclaimed debut solo ‘comeback’ album recorded after an extended break of many years following a long period of illness. The songs were written for the York Museums Trust community project ‘Reflections on War’ and were based on and inspired by artwork and memorabilia from the ‘Reflections on War’ exhibition at York Art Gallery in 2009 aswell as true stories and recollections of project participants.

"Gary Miller has a distinctive voice which he uses to deliver songs in a very direct manner. On this CD, however, he has experimented with different approaches. These contrasts, combined with varied musical arrangements on each track and Gary’s ability to compose strong melodies, make for a riveting listen... those who seek challenge and intelligence in the music they listen to will, like me, welcome the re-emergence of this unique talent." Joe Grint, Tykes News, UK.

"Lots of actually quite decent songs about soldiers and war with good folk-rockish arrangements." fRoots, UK.

"A very exciting, multi-faceted view of war from Gary Miller. Gary and his brother formed the Whisky Priests and produced many wondrous cds filled with the culture and folk art of the North-East of England. This look at war is equally folky and earthy. But it is also reflective and inspirational- comforting. Great listening with a variety of styles and textures. Highly recommended. The cd is truly inspiring and uplifting and covers the phenomena of war now so much a part of our own experience today. Well worth listening to." Conrad Jay Bladey, Hutman Productions, USA.

MAD DOGS AND ENGLISHMEN

GOING DOWN WITH ALICE

mad dogs and englishmen

Mad Dogs and Englishmen was a unique collaboration between Gary Miller and Glenn Miller of The Whisky Priests and Joseph Porter of Blyth Power. ‘Going Down With Alice’ is a stripped to the bones all-acoustic recording with vocal and songwriting duties shared by Gary and Joseph, led by Glenn’s inventive accordion arrangements. This CD exclusively features some of Gary’s greatest songs, including ‘A Rich Seam’ and ‘Seven Hills’ aswell as a reworking of ‘Full Circle’ (the last ever song The Whisky Priests recorded for the now hard to find compilation CD ‘A Full Head of Steam’).

“Porter and the Millers actually write great songs with words that mean something and are usually substantially rooted. This reminds you how subtle these guys actually are.” Folk Roots, UK.

“This collaboration draws the template for what folk-rock could and should be in a world anxiously wrestling with newfound fashions and freedoms.” Folk on Tap, UK.

THE WHISKY PRIESTS

"HERE COME THE RANTING LADS" - LIVE!

ranting lads live

The Whisky Priests second live album recorded at the Markthalle in Hamburg on 10th October 1998 during the band’s ‘Think Positive!’ Tour. Includes an exclusive recording of ‘Success Express’ (a powerful instrumental introduced to the band’s set specially for this recording) and a rare acapella cover of Jock Purdon’s ‘Blackleg Mining Man’, aswell as an essential and epic 11-minute-plus version of sing-a-long crowd favourite ‘Mother, Waiting’.

"16 tracks of total commitment; it's wild and great fun; however all this mayhem hides some serious talent. The playing is tight and precise. The whole performance has a refreshing sense of integrity about it. There are no space fillers and make weights here; it's music with guts and conviction." Folktalk, UK.

THINK POSITIVE!

think possitive

The Whisky Priests sixth and final studio album, recorded in the Scottish Highlands, featured many of the band’s best ever songs to some fine arrangements but was let down somewhat by weak production standards from an inexperienced producer. Despite receiving great critical reviews and pleasing long-term fans who saw this as a return to form, Gary’s general feeling remains that it did not achieve its full potential at the time and was nowhere near as good as it could and should have been. In hindsight, however, it serves as a great swansong to The Whisky Priests studio output.

"Their most assured and confident album to date." Rock 'N' Reel, UK.

"The most considered Priests album to date." Folk Roots, UK.

"The band's finest moment to date." Taplas, UK.

"Heavy doses of wit and a spot of wisdom." Time Out, UK.

"Powerfully energetic and totally committed - their masterwork." J'OR, Eire.

LIFE'S TAPESTRY

tree

The Whisky Priests fifth studio album (their third in a row to be recorded at Trinity Heights studio in Newcastle-Upon-Tyne, England) was critically hailed as their most impressive and groundbreaking album to date, with Gary receiving major plaudits for his songwriting. With a broader sound and greater emphasis on electric instruments compared to previous releases, however, the album proved divisive among the band’s hardcore fan base, as many surprisingly found the band’s natural progression to be too much of a departure.

"Their finest album to date...ranks alongside anything the whole folk-rock movement has ever produced” Rock 'N' Reel, UK

BLEEDING SKETCHES

bleeding sketches

The Whisky Priests took an enormous risk with this, their fourth studio album, by using the lyrics of North East of England poet Keith Armstrong for every song on the album. It was a bold experimental move that saw the band take a major creative step forward, laying the foundations for what was to follow.

THE POWER AND THE GLORY

book

The Whisky Priests third studio album released in 1994 on the back of the success of ‘Bloody Well Live!’ when they were riding the crest of a creative peak. This was the band’s first album of all original material when Gary started to take his songwriting seriously; with more variety and depth than previous releases, it includes guest performances by members of Bearpark & Esh Colliery Band and Alistair Anderson (Northumbrian Pipes, English Concertina) plus Mick Tyas’ memorable songwriting contribution ‘Three Rivers’.

“Gary Miller is one of the most literate and insightful songwriters in the world of folk-rock… his writing has always been exemplary. He touches on every level of human emotion. When it comes to verbalizing the ubiquitous themes of unfulfilled dreams and squandered opportunities no one does it better than Gary Miller. And his melodies are equally as brilliant as his prose. Without fail, Miller’s melodies capture the implicit mood of each song.”
Dave Sleger, All Music Guide, USA.
